NATURE AND SCOPE OF JOB:
The purpose of the Building Literacy Leader is to provide classroom teachers support and professional development related to literacy through presentations, coaching, and mentoring in order to improve instructional practices and student performances. The Building Literacy Leader is also responsible for providing individualized reading instruction to students using the Reading Recovery program.
JOB FUNCTIONS:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Instructional Strategies:
Model best practices and/or research-based instructional techniques. Assist teachers in incorporating these techniques in their regular classroom instruction through coaching, mentoring, modeling, and feedback.
Assist para-professionals in working with individual students and small groups in literacy instruction.
Maintain a consistent focus on teaching and learning related to standards.
Collaborate on reading instruction for elementary students.
Conduct the Reading Recovery program for the elementary school.
Assessment:
1. Gather assessment data (classroom observations, screenings, DRA, running records, student work, etc.) to assist teachers in the identification of students needing specialized reading instruction and to help teachers and administrators make effective instructional decisions.
Collaboration:
1. Facilitate training, support, and staff development for K-6 teachers in the areas of content knowledge, instructional strategies, and assessment.
2. Make classroom visits as appropriate and necessary to improve student achievement.
3. Provide information and guidance regarding best practices and/or research-based instructional techniques through various activities such as:
Coaching sessions
Modeling and demonstration lessons with pre and post discussions
Study groups
Staff meetings
Professional development/in-service training
Workshops
Team teaching
Classroom observation with feedback and discussion
Collaborative planning with classroom teachers
Facilitate collaborative meetings
Use data to make instructional decisions.
4. Maintain records and reports consistently and in an appropriate manner.
5. Maintain confidentiality.
6. Obtain feedback about coaching from colleagues.
7. Meet on a bi-weekly basis with the building principal to discuss concerns, report on work since previous meeting, and plan future building programs.
8. Collaborate with other Building Literacy Leaders and district level staff.
Limits of Authority:
The Building Literacy Leader will maintain a collegial relationship with teachers for the purpose of improving instruction and student performance. The Building Literacy Leader will have no supervisory or evaluative authority.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Performs other duties within the building such as recess supervisor, lunchroom or hall duty, bus duty, etc., as assigned by the principal.
Participates in the required in-service days designed for staff development.
Follows all School District policies and procedures including those required of an elementary teacher.
Maintains accurate and complete records that are required by law, School District policy, and procedure.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND MENTAL ABILITY:
Knowledge of and application procedures on use of personal computers and programs appropriate for elementary reading, math, and language.
Ability to follow and successfully complete both written and oral directions.
Ability to enunciate clearly and communicate positively throughout the work day.
Ability to calculate accurately.
Possess visual acuity, aided or unaided, to read and interpret accurately written reports of a technical nature.
Possess the ability to work with various personality types.
Possess sound emotional judgment.
EDUCATION, LICENSE, CERTIFICATION OR FORMAL TRAINING:
Posses all certificates required by the State of Wyoming.
Posses at a minimum a Bachelor's Degree.
Continue to pursue graduate level classes for professional growth.
Reading Recovery training preferred.
Two years classroom experience preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Posses stamina to remain on feet for periods as long as two full hours without discomfort or excessive fatigue.
Possss stamina to remain seated for periods of two hours without discomfort or excessive fatigue.
Posses visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer monitor for at least part of each day.
Posses sufficient strength and endurance to project voice to classrooms for some period of time throughout the work day.
ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:
Air conditioned buildings.
Occasional exposure to weather extremes.
