    a.       The Common Cold

                                                                            i.      Treat symptoms:

    1.       Hydrate with non-caffeinated fluids.

    2.       Use Humidifier.

    3.       Practice frequent and thorough HANDWASHING.

    4.       Call physician for:  throat that is too sore to swallow, shortness of breath, cough that sounds like a bark or “whoop”, or fever and high fever.

    5.       Call physician for any concerns.

    b.      Coughs

                                                                            i.      Hydrate with non-caffeinated fluids.

                                                                          ii.      Use Humidifier.

                                                                         iii.      Practice frequent and thorough HANDWASHING.

                                                                        iv.      Call physician for rapid or difficulty breathing or wheezing.

                                                                          v.      Call physician for any cough characterized by a “whooping” or “barking” sound.

                                                                        vi.      Monitor temperature (see Fever) and contact physician for high fever.

                                                                       vii.      Call physician for any concerns.

     

    c.       Fever (oral temperature over 100.4)

                                                                            i.      Maintain normal body temperature and comfort.

                                                                          ii.      DO NOT give Aspirin or Aspirin containing products.

                                                                         iii.      Hydrate with non-caffeinated fluids.

                                                                        iv.      Provide sponge baths with luke warm water.  Stop bathing if shivering or goose bumps appear.

                                                                          v.      Call physician for any concerns.

    SCHOOL:

    Students excluded from school with fever of 100 degrees or higher.  School nurse may request student to be excluded until fever free for 24 hours without the use of anti-fever medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil).

     

    d.      Ear Ache

                                                                            i.      Avoid water in ears.

                                                                          ii.      Do not put anything in ears.

                                                                         iii.      Call physician for:  drainage from ear, swelling of ear, high fever.

                                                                        iv.      Call physician for any concerns.

     

    e.      Vomiting

                                                                            i.      Wait 30 – 60 minutes to give anything by mouth following vomiting episode

                                                                          ii.      Begin with teaspoons of liquids

                                                                         iii.      Advance to solid food 6 hours after last vomiting episode.

    1.       Begin with easily digested foods such as applesauce or cereal.

                                                                        iv.      Watch for dehydration (dark urine, lack of energy, dry sticky mouth).

                                                                          v.      Contact physician for:  fever accompanying vomiting, severe abdominal pain accompanying vomiting

                                                                        vi.      Contact physician for any concerns.

    SCHOOL: 

    Students are excluded from school until vomiting is resolved.  School nurse may request that student be excluded from school until 24 hours after last vomiting episode.

     

    f.        Diarrhea

                                                                            i.      Watch for dehydration (dark urine, lack of energy, dry sticky mouth)

                                                                          ii.      Avoid dairy products

                                                                         iii.      Hydrate with non-caffeinated fluids

                                                                        iv.      Call physician for:   fever accompanying the diarrhea, diarrhea lasting 3 or more days, concerns about dehydration,

    SCHOOL:

    Students are excluded from school until diarrhea is resolved.  School nurse may request that student be excluded from school until 24 hours after the last diarrhea episode.

     

    g.       Rash

                                                                            i.      Check for other symptoms including headache, fever, not eating/drinking well, hives

                                                                          ii.      Call 911 immediately for shortness of breath or swelling of face, lips and tongue.

                                                                         iii.      Call physician for:  rash with fever, spreading of rash, child looks unwell, presence of swollen/red lesions.

                                                                        iv.      Treat with 2 cups oatmeal in warm bath with physician’s permission; pat skin to dry, do not rub skin, trim nails.

    SCHOOL:

    Students are excluded from school if rash is accompanied by fever or sore throat.  Students may      also be excluded per school nurse and allowed to attend with medical provider consent.
